A Valentine's Day Writing Competition

Soon it will be Valentine’s Day!

Have you dappled in writing romantic stories? All the more reason to join this competition <3

“Love is in the air.”

Soon it will be that time again...the time when hearts can be found hanging in our windows, handwritten valentines in our mailboxes, and flowers or semi-sweet chocolates in hand. Come February, everyone seems to be thinking about love… that, or even sitting at home with a pint of Ben & Jerry's watching a romance film solo, a box of Kleenex nearby.

No matter how you choose to spend your day, this Valentine’s we're giving you a chance to write about love (or heartbreak) to win some awesome prizes! We have decided to make a Valentine’s Day competition, not to celebrate couples or love or the wonderful display that is all a part of it, but rather to present the opportunity to write and read good love stories.

Keep in mind that it's not always a happy ending and it doesn't have to be all hearts and butterflies - so whatever idea of romance you had in mind, or whatever manifestation of it you choose to write about in your love story, we welcome any interpretation of love in this year's Valentine's Day competition.

A little about Valentine’s Day...

Traditionally, we celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th. Since way back when, it's on Valentine’s Day that couples give each other cards, flowers, chocolates, and other lovely gifts as a show of their affection for one another. The day usually warrants couples going out and doing something romantic together be it a dinner date, movie, or curling up on the couch at home.

Valentine’s Day was introduced in 496 by Pope Gelasius and named after the Roman priest Valentin. These days it's very popular, especially in the U.S. where 192 million Valentine's cards are sent every year!

How to Participate

It's totally up to you if you want to write a fanfiction, a poem, a longer story, a one-shot, or something else! You just have to write about/include one of the options (or more) below:

1: Write about getting over someone/past love. Love can also hurt. Maybe you have been through a breakup and want to write about that? ...Or perhaps create a character that's just gone through a breakup of their own with a lover/newly-minted ex that they need to get over?

2: Write about falling in love with someone you may not or cannot have. This could be someone who is harder to woo than the protagonist originally thought, a forbidden love, or even sworn enemies...

3: Create a Valentine's inspired cover, fanart, or trailer! We also want to make room for the creatives/designers among our movellians who would prefer to create a cover, a trailer, or fanart based on the Valentine's theme and about their favorite fandom/subject <3

4: Write a new year love story! It has just been new years - so write a love story that takes place over a new year! Maybe two people meet at a new year's party and fall in love? Perhaps despite a year of hardship, their love overcomes all? You decide.

Remember to put in your summary/description which one of the options above you have chosen. You can also write about more than one (or all of) the options here if you so choose.
